You probably don’t have the $231,000 it takes to get a 2012 McLaren MP4-12C supercar in your garage for good. That may no longer be a problem, however, as Hertz car rentals is now allowing customers to take a shot at driving one on a day-to-day basis.
As long as you’re in Britain.
Over there, however, an MP4-12C retails for £212,000 ($337,000 at current exchange rates), so taking one out for a day at £1,134.30 ($1,800) might not seem like a bad deal. Heck, if you’re renting it for 28 days or more, Hertz will even lower the rate to £906.30 ($1,450). That’s an effective savings of $9,800!
“Hertz aspires to offer truly innovative rental experiences to our customers, and the spell-binding McLaren MP4-12C provides an opportunity of a lifetime to experience Formula 1 race-bred technologies on the road,” says Michel Taride, president of Hertz International.
For those of you keeping score at home, the 2012 McLaren MP4-12C is the first road-going car in almost two decades to come from Formula One powerhouse McLaren. It’s powered by a small twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 engine capable of producing 592 horsepower. That’ll allow it to reach 60 mph in a hair over 3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 205 mph. Our friends at Motor Trend seemed pretty impressed with it when they got their hands on one, and they’re a tough crowd to please.
With the McLaren not yet in U.S. rental fleets, we’re not too sure what to tell you if you have your heart set on taking one out for a night. The MP4-12C is part of Hertz’s U.K. “Premium Velocity Collection,” which is similar to the rental agency’s Los Angeles- and Las Vegas-based “Beverly Hills Collection.” The next-closest car in U.S. fleets is the Ferrari 458 Italia, which rents for less in the U.K. despite costing more to buy. In the U.S., however, such a car goes for about $2,200 to $2,500 per day. Expect the McLaren to go for similar money if it’s ever rented out in the U.S.
Don’t mind us as we sit back down now.
