Since Toyota and Subaru first announced they were developing a sports car together, auto enthusiasts have been waiting patiently for the Toyota-Subaru rear-wheel drive sports coupe. However, Subaru is wondering how production of a rear-wheel drive vehicle will affect their reputation.
“We’re an all-wheel drive brand,” said Subaru spokesman Michael McHale. Over the years Subaru has built up a reputation of being a fine manufacturer of all-wheel drive vehicles to the point where all-wheel drive could be considered a brand hallmark. Subaru fears that being associated with a rear-wheel drive vehicle may alienate Subaru enthusiasts.
Our take? If Subaru is so worried about being associated with a rear-wheel drive vehicle we wonder why they don’t they just sit back down with Toyota and consider releasing an all-wheel drive variant? Who knows it might be a hit and with the demise of the Celica GT-Four years ago it would be nice to know that Toyota has something new to bring to the table when it comes to the World Rally Championship.
