Volkswagen to Debut TDI Beetle At Chicago Auto Show

Der neue Volkswagen Beetle

Environmentally friendly Beetle fans now have the engine to match their retro style: Volkswagen will showcase a TDI-powered Beetle at the Chicago Auto Show in February. Hippies of the world, rejoice!

The TDI joins the Turbo and 2.5 engines in the Beetle lineup, and will be a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that’s shared with the Jetta and Sportwagen. And just like it does in those models, the TDI engine produces 140 horsepower and 236 lb- ft of torque, good for an estimated 30mpg city/42mpg highway rating.

Three transmissions will be available: a five-speed manual; a six-speed automatic; and VW’s beloved DSG dual-clutch auto that’s already available in the Beetle Turbo. Pricing hasn’t been announced at this stage, but if the difference between the gasoline and diesel Jetta is to be believed, the Beetle TDI will carry a price premium of $2,700. Hey, torque ain’t cheap.
