Yes, Automotive.com‘s still a consumer-oriented site. Really. We are. Check out the Toyota GT86′s siblings, which are sold here in the states as the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ. We cover, for example, the FR-S’ fuel economy and pricing, things we know you consumers are interested in and thought you’d be getting here. And we do. Really.
They’re gone? OK, gearheads, here’s a treat for you before you head back to Motor Trend and Automobile Magazine. Toyota Europe posted several videos following Toyota Design Division’s General Manager Akihiro “Dezi” Nagaya as he lovingly covers your latest niche vehicle.
In the aptly named “Part 1: Design inspirations from the 1967 2000GT”, Nagaya covers how the Toyota 2000GT inspired the Toyota GT86′s proportions and sheetmetal.
He continues on in “Part 2: Exterior visual presence”, adding how the design shaped/was shaped by the Toyota GT86′s naturally aspirated, 2.0-liter inline four boxer, which you all know generates 197 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. (If the latter just confused you, leave. Please. You are a consumer and this is a car enthusiast’s post. But come back: we’re a consumer-oriented site. Really.)
Part 3, “Interior styling”, is the most boring part except when it concentrates on the six-speed manual transmission. Yes, an automatic’s available but that’s for the masses and their “toasters.” The video tour finally ends on Part 4 which covers the Toyota GT86′s logo design. Bring tissues.
Automotive.com’s take: For those non-enthusaists out there checking this out (we warned you), this is called “red meat” for your gearhead friends. If you’re just one of those intrigued by the Scion FR-S or Subaru BRZ as a potential sporty looking daily driver, that’s great. But this post isn’t for you.
