It’s no secret that Germany’s Nurburgring is one of the most famous race tracks the entire world. Automakers like Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus have all been caught with its fair share of camouflaged testing vehicles there. The aforementioned automakers all go there to test and perfect its next latest and greatest vehicle, and in cases like the Cadillac ATS, it shows. Even though there’s no official scoreboard, posting a “record” at the Nurburgring is a feather in any automaker’s cap. Now, Toyota is posting records at the ‘Ring, but with two twists. First, it’s doing it in an electric vehicle, and second, it’s going fast. Very fast.
In today’s installment of Video of the Day, we ride along with Toyota and its EV P002 as it navigates every bend and turn of the ‘ring. For the second time in just over a year, Toyota’s Motorsports wing has set another record in Germany. The EV P002 was able to lap the ‘ring in 7.22.32, shattering its own record by 25 seconds, which was set back in August of last year. That record was first set while piloting EV P001, a Radical chassis modified to fit an E-Wolf supercar.
This is the second notable achievement for the EV P002 and its crew this year, as it set another record at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Toyota Motorsports has been able to set a few different electric vehicle records thanks to the TMG DC Quick Charger, an off-board battery-to-battery charging system that allows racecars to recharge without relying on a stable power grid. This charger features a 42kWh lithium ion battery, can be recharged from the power grid, and rides along in a Toyota Hiace van. The charger can provide electric motorsport vehicles with a quick, full charge over the course of a night.
