Mercedes-Benz first rolled out the G-Wagen, known now as the G-Class, back in 1979 after the Shah of Iran, a shareholder of the German automaker at the time, recommended it. Now, the super-luxury SUV is known more for being a $113,000 status symbol rather than the tough off-roader that is was designed to be. In more than 30 years of service, the G-Class has crawled over every piece of this planet and is even employed by armed forces around the world.
In our latest installment of Video of the Day, Mercedes-Benz takes us around the world to different climates to show how versatile the G-Class still is. After watching, we admit that maybe we’re part of the status-symbol evolution the G-Class has suffered from: Who in their right mind would put an $113,000 luxury SUV through every element under the sun? Either way, Mercedes-Benz shows us that if you have a hundred thousand extra Washingtons lying around, they have a good idea of how you can get rid of them.
For those in need of an attention-grabbing ride and like to off-road in extreme terrain without sacrificing comfort, the G550 may garner some attention. If you’re more into going over the bumps and rocks and through the river quickly but still need a ride to get into the country club, the G63 AMG should do the trick just fine. If you want to see this combination in action for yourself, then check out the video below and tell us what you think in the comment section at the bottom of the page.
