Jay Leno has it made. The late night talk show host has developed an extensive car collection that includes hundreds of vehicles and even a few aircraft. As a result of his high-profile collection and passion for cars, automakers like Volkswagen love having him drive their newest vehicles.
Volkswagen recently invited Leno to the automaker’s Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany to drive a 1938 and 2012 Beetle. First up for the test ride was the classic 1938 Beetle, the oldest known in existence. Leno takes the Beetle around the grounds of Volkswagen’s headquarters, getting an idea of how well the popular VW rides, more than seven decades after it was built. After doing a few laps, Leno is greeted by a 2012 Beetle.
Immediately Leno notices the similarities in the sloped roof and how the Beetle has kept “its’ DNA and essence” even with the more modern versions. Next, Leno notices the difference between the old Beetle’s 24-horsepower 1.0-liter engine and the 2012 Beetle’s available 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine.
