What do you get when there are no speed limits and you’re is holding the reigns to 560 finely tuned German horsepower? If you guessed Ignition Episode 80 with a 2014 Audi RS7 as the star of the show (sorry, Carlos), you’d be right! On the latest episode of Ignition, Motor Trend Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago heads to Audi’s HQ in Germany to check out the 2014 RS7 and take it for a 500 mile “spin.” Obviously, with 560 horsepower, you have to exercise a monumental amount of self-restraint on roads with speed limits. Luckily for Lago and his trusty RS7 steed, there are still parts of Germany’s Autobahn that aren’t governed by a speed limit. This can only mean one thing: Top speed tests.
Of course, it’s not all about seeing how fast the 2014 Audi RS7 can go, but what makes it go that fast. Lago starts off by talking about the witchcraft that is torque vectoring, and how the 2014 Audi RS7 utilizes it to go around corners without sliding off at breakneck speeds. Besides, you’re going to need all the help you can get when tasked with controlling Audi’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine which, in addition to the 560 hp, turns out 516 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to an eight-speed transmission, you know, in case fuel economy is important to you and your RS7.
As Lago demonstrates, the 2014 Audi RS7′s engine output eclipses even that of the R8 V-10, making it an “adequate” choice to drive on the Autobahn. As usual, we’re not going to reveal everything Lago does on Ignition Episode 80 here, so check out the video in its entirety below.
