In North America, Land Rover is known for chauffeuring soccer moms to and from the local organic supermarket and then to a nail appointment. In other parts of the world, Land Rover has become one of, if not the most iconic off-road brand on planet earth. In the latest installment of Ignition, Motor Trend‘s Technical Director Frank Markus travels to Marrakesh, Morocco to experience first-hand how the 2013 Range Rover Autobiography fares in some of the planet’s most demanding terrain. Markus takes the latest Range Rover, which has been redesigned for the 2013 model year, over rocky trails, sand dunes, and coastal highways all while gale force winds whirl around outside.
With the weather quickly deteriorating, Markus is forced to use the new Terrain Response 2 system’s various settings. While traversing though sand, the Terrain Response system’s sand mode allows for a more aggressive throttle control in order to get up that sand dune without digging yourself into a hole. The instrument cluster also has a read-out for the rear and center differential that are green when open but gradually turn orange as it begins to lock.
Underneath the hood, a 5.0-liter V-8 engine churns out 510 horsepower, 461 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The luxury SUV tips the scales at a whopping 5,150 pounds but even in deep sand, the Range Rover’s onboard equipment and electronics have little trouble getting you to your destination. Soccer moms and safari guides alike are going to have to pony up some serious cash if they want the 2013 Range Rover Autobiography though. The base price of the latest Range Rover checks in at $130,950.
