How do you make a Porsche perform better? It’s simple, really. Add more technology and tweak the vehicle’s dimensions to favor hugging the road even more than it already does. The 2013 Porsche Boxster S does just that and comes to play with some new technology and different dimensions, all of which are in the name of improved performance. The smallest Porsche currently offered boasts a 3.4-liter flat six-cylinder engine mated to your choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It’ll also set you back $87,125 if you want the model seen in Ignition episode No. 49.
On the latest episode of Ignition, Motor Trend‘s Carlos Lago throws the tiny Porsche around to see if it’s still is as fun as the one it’s replacing. As Lago states, the new Boxster S is easy on the eyes and has a look all of its own. While the exterior styling is aesthetically pleasing, it’s underneath the sheet metal where the new Boxster S shines brightest. Thanks to more power, a wider front and rear track, and, perhaps most importantly, a lower weight than the previous model, the Boxster S can drift like no one’s business. And, as you’ll see in the latest episode of Ignition, there’s no shortage of drifting here.
It’s also faster, too. As Lago shows us, the 2013 Porsche Boxster S sprints from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds and easily breaks 100 mph in the quarter mile. Lago goes as far to say the Boxster S “may be the greatest sports car in the world.” What really wins him over is the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and its ability to thrill the driver no matter what road you’re on. The sound of the engine at high revs also won Lago over describing it as “intoxicating.” The Porsche Boxster S Lago piloted in this episode came with the optional sports exhaust, which provides the driver and passenger with a burble similar to that of an AK-47 being fired.
