Video: Guinness Book of World Records Verifies 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Catches Golfball

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS roadster interior catches golf ball

We’ve reviewed the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG convertible/roadster, and found it an amazing vehicle: fun-to-drive, yet a comfortable cruiser even in the jammed-packed LA traffic. But the SLS AMG as a golf ball catcher? Now that’s an unexpected feature for the six-figure supercar.

The feature was discovered by professional golfer Jake Shephard, and Formula One and Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM, German Touring Car Masters) driver extraordinaire David Coutlhard. After a test run or two, Shephard slammed the golf ball high over at over 178 mph, with Coutlhard bolting after it in the 2012 Mercedes SLS like a black-haired retriever playing catch. The rest, as you can see in the video below, made it to the Guinness Book of World records:

Says Coulthard, “The only way to track the ball was to keep your eyes on it all the time: it’s a real adrenaline rush but it’s not the most comfortable thing to do because for a moment, you’re not watching the road! I was as happy as I’ve ever been winning a Grand Prix because I was so surprised quite frankly that it went in, and went in so solidly!”
