Union Signing Bonuses May Have Helped Move Talks Forward

Dollar Bills

As union members remain on strike at the time of this post, we look at some of the other issues reported to have been brought to the negotiation table.
One issue is signing bonues.

Fans of the National Football League and the National Basketball Association are well aware of the concept. In order to sign a top draft choice or free agent, teams in both sports offer a signing bonus on top of the salary negotiated into the contract.

Apparently, people in the auto industry like the idea. The talk is that a substantial signing bonus for active workers in the UAW could be a key that will finally close out the negotiations for a new contract between GM and the union.
According to the Detroit News, the one time cash payment to workers could sweeten the pot and help UAW execs sell the contract easier to its rank and file.

There is past history concerning signing bonuses and UAW-Detroit Three contracts. There was a signing bonus of $1,350 in 1999 and a bonus of $3,000 in 2003. With the union expected to have a tougher job selling a new contract to its rank and file, talk is that the bonus, if done, will be higher than those previous bonuses.
