Tacking on an “S” at the end apparently qualifies something as sporty. Well it’s worked for the past decade or so. Why stop now?
Ford is bringing to the U.K. the Zetec S as part of its Focus line-up. They did add some sporty elements, such as front and rear spoilers, 17-inch alloy wheels, aluminum style foot pedals and a hand brake cover, but cosmetics don’t truly make a sports car.
All these additions are supposedly worth over £1,600 ($2569), but Ford is being generous and offering it at a premium of only £750 ($1204) above the usual. An additional styling pack offers 18-inch alloy wheels and privacy glass for £500 ($803), while the World Rally Championship pack comes with ‘checkered flag’ decals and scuff plates at £200 ($321). Don’t get the WRC pack—it makes you appear like a complete tool.
The Zetec S is available in both three and five-door body styles and comes with the same engine choices as the Focus Zetec, with the addition of a 1.6 Ti-VCT 115HP petrol unit. Diesel units are also available for this model.
Our take? If putting on a new mask could turn our cars into sports cars, many of us would have done so already. Nonetheless, if you’re in it purely for the looks, the Zetec S isn’t a bad option.
