Toyota Throws in Battery Charger Installation with 2012 Prius Plug-In Hybrid

One major challenge faced by electric car owners is recharging their vehicle’s batteries. While most EVs can recharge using the standard 120-volt current found in most homes, a full charge can take an unacceptable 8-10 hours. On the other hand, 240-volt chargers cut that figure roughly in half. Unfortunately, they cost $700 to $1,400, and the price of installation can double that figure.

Toyota announced this week that the 240-volt charger for its upcoming 2012 Prius Plug-In Hybrid will cost only $999, including the price of installation. The announcement comes at a good time as Toyota will start accepting orders for the Prius Plug-In later this month. The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid goes on sale in March 2012 in fourteen states with nationwide rollout sometime in 2013.

Automotive.com take: Including installation in the EV charger cost is a game changer and will definitely entice folks to reconsider buying EVs. Will you buy an EV if you knew the automaker was absorbing the up to $3,000 price tag for installing the charger? As always, let us know in the comments below.
