Toyota has issued a voluntary recall of its Scion iQ microcar. The automaker has received some complaints, and is taking a precautionary measure.
The problem
Toyota is voluntarily recalling 11,200 Scion iQ models to inspect data cables and front-passenger weight sensors. The cables connected to the sensors are easily susceptible to damage. The sensors are used to control the seatbelt pre-tensioners and the airbag system, especially important as the iQ is a microcar. To date, no accidents or injuries have been reported on account of this issue.
The Fix
Toyota will notify owners that may be affected by mail in early December. The repair takes approximately one hour. The recall only affects the Scion iQ, and not any other Toyota, Scion, or Lexus models.
The iQ is Scion’s smallest model, and among the smallest new cars available in the U.S. The 2012 Scion iQ has an entry price of $15,265, but can quick go up with a few added options. Powered by a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine, the microcar get an EPA estimated 36 mpg city and 37 mpg on the highway.
