The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy released their annual most fuel-efficient vehicle list this week. The hybrid Toyota Prius and the new Honda Civic hybrid ranked first and second, respectively. For those looking for a hybrid SUV, the compact Ford Escape and its Mercury twin, the Mariner, ranked 10th. Interestingly, six gasoline-powered vehicles took some of the top ten spots. They are the Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Toyota Corolla (manual only), and theToyota Yaris.
Our take? High gas prices will return despite the recent drop in prices. Americans should continue to factor fuel economy among their vehicle requirements when purchasing their next vehicle. Good lucks, great hauling ability, cargo room, mean little when it costs nearly triple digits to fuel up weekly.
