Hell is stacked with mountains of Mercedes-Benz press releases. That is to say, there have been several this week, and relevant ones at that. This is not unusual during auto show season. But as writers, we are trained to cut through the nonsense and to filter out the details. Which is why I can point to you these two things about today’s Mercedes-Benz press release: the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG will arrive with two models and two trims. The silver lining is an “autojourno” dream of a beast: a shooting brake.
Well, sort of. Technically, a shooting brake is a coupe with a wagon body; this “shooting brake” is actually a four-door wagon, albeit one with swooping, coupe-like styling. There’s also a sedan–which Mercedes calls a four-door coupe–and both are stunning. The sedan and shooting brake come in two models: the 4MATIC, which is the standard all-wheel drive; and the S-Model, a slightly higher tuned variant. Both are stuffed with massive twin-turbocharged V-8′s, making 557 and 585 horsepower, respectively.
If performance numbers matter to you–and if you’re in the market for an AMG, then they likely do–consider that these cars accelerate to freeway speeds in less than the amount of time it took you read this sentence (between 3.6 and 4.2 seconds). All the while offering the latest advancements in safety technology, and the plush luxury normally associated with all of Mercedes’ vehicles.
Other notable features include a seven-speed automatic transmission, an adaptable racing-inspired suspension, available ceramic brakes, and the finest Bang & Olufsen surround sound audio ever offered. The shooting brake also comes with an American Cherry-lined storage compartment in the floorboard.
No word yet on American availability, pricing, or the number of cupholders.
