We haven’t been hearing any recent reports about hydrogen as a source of energy for our vehicles of the future. Yes, some car manufacturers have been exploring the prospects of hydrogen with small fleets of test vehicles. Companies like Honda and General Motors come to mind. Hybrids, biofuels, and the soon-to-be-introduced electric cars appear to be the focus for the future.
But wait! Gas2 reports that students at the Sakarya University, Turkey, have built a hydrogen car and it gets 1,336 miles per gallon.
The car is called the Sahimo. It can travel so far on so little fuel because it is extremely light. In fact, it is said that it weighs only 240 pounds. That’s because the car is made of carbon fiber.
The Sahimo currently has a range of 353 miles on a quarter gallon of fuel. It won third place for the most efficient vehicle in Europe’s 26th Shell Eco Marathon. Next test is the 2009 Global Green Challenge, a race that will have twenty electric, hybrid, alternative fuel and low emission vehicles participating.
Students involved in the project hope that the vehicle can travel 3,000 kilometers on just 3 liters of hydrogen in the Global Green Challenge, which is taking place in Australia in October.
