Police Inspect Vandalized Car

On July 12, 1974 a Washington man had his 1965 Volkswagen bus stolen.

Normally, such a theft is hardly worth mentioning since cars are stolen every day. In fact, on average there is a car theft occurring in the United States once every 24 seconds which equates to more than 1.3 million cars stolen annually.

However, what does make this theft so notable is that 35 years after it was stolen, it was recovered in excellent condition.

Here’s the deal. According to sources, the bus was being shipped to the Netherlands along with several other VWs by an Arizona restorer when U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents found it at the Port of L.A. Law enforcement currently has no leads on who the original thief was however they are not considering the restorer to be a suspect.

When it was originally stolen, Allstate paid the owner approximately $2500 to the owner to settle the claim. Right now given the VWs pristine condition it is now currently valued at about $25,000.

The original owner of the bus has not been located; however if he’s reading this then he must be pleased to know that the police have finally found his car.
