The current Subaru Legacy isn’t that old, but when we drove it, we surmised that it had lost that Subaru lovin’ feeling. That could be why after being on the market since just 2011, the automaker is already getting ready to roll out an all-new version.
Seen testing in Michigan, the camouflaged 2015 Subaru Legacy sedan comes to light just weeks after we caught sight of the 2015 Subaru Outback, which shares the same chassis. In the new shots, our spy photographer caught it testing against the Audi allroad quattro and Infiniti G37x, showing that Subaru has some lofty benchmarks for its latest midsize sedan. Recent competition like the Honda Accord, Mazda6, and Ford Fusion have shown that upscale family sedans are becoming the norm.
The 2015 Subaru Legacy seen in these pictures looks like it has the same EyeSight smart cruise control system as our comparison-winning 2014 Subaru Forester, judging by its thick rearview mirror. Powertrains are expected to be a 2.5-liter flat-4 with 173 horsepower, a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-4 with 250 horsepower, and a 3.6-liter flat-6 that is likely to carryover from the current model. A hybrid system is also likely to become available. Expect fuel economy to go way up versus the current Legacy courtesy of better aerodynamics and Subaru’s slick continuously variable automatic transmission that will send power to all four wheels.
Outside, the 2015 Subaru Legacy will have projector-beam headlights and LED tail lights, and expect it to share styling elements with both the 2013 Subaru Impreza and the Advanced Tourer Concept from the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. The car should enter production in early 2014 as a 2015 model. Look for the 2015 Subaru Legacy to hit a major auto show sometime late this year if not early next year.
