We’ve all heard the slang to describe oil — black gold, Texas tea. But now there is a new source for oil, algae. What will we call that?
Solarzyme has figured out a way to get algae to produce diesel. The process includes growing algae in the dark and feeding it a variety of waste biomass and non-food materials. The stuff that results is the real thing. The biofuel has actually been road tested in vehicles that have NOT been modified which have traveled a collective thousands of miles. The company showcased the new technology at the CALSTART Target 2030 exhibition in Sacramento, California. There Solarzyme exhibited a Jeep Liberty that actually runs on algal-based renewable diesel.
The fuel is a replacement for the standard petrodiesel and it has passed American Society for Testing and Materials D975 specifications.
The Jeep proves that this type of renewable biofuel can be used without any modification of the present infrastructure.
