Traffic Going Fast

We all know what speed and red-light cameras are. But for those of you who don’t, they are cameras mounted on poles, trained on the road and constantly snapping pictures of cars that exceed the speed limit or run a red light. The license number on the car assists authorities in identifying the perpetrator and they mail the ticket out to them. According to sellers of radar detectors, more than half of the states have these kinds of systems. They are common in such cities as Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York, and Phoenix.
Well, speed and red-light cameras, speed traps and DUI checkpoints have all been sources of conflict ever since they started to appear. With modern technology the way it is there has been features added to GPS navigation systems for the car that identify these areas. But you may own a Personal Navigation Device (PND), a small unit you carry with you and assists in guiding you to your driven destination.

Phantom Alert recently released software specifically for PNDs that identify any one of more than 5,000 traffic cameras that can generate a traffic ticket sent to you by mail. The data is downloadable from the Phantom Alert website and includes updates. It costs $39.95 a year or $99.95 for a lifetime. The software is compatible with most Garmin, TomTom, and Magellan PNDs.

TomTom also offers free traffic camera location software in the U.S. You can download it from its website. Garmin also offers such downloads by importing from third party sites through the company’s POI loader.
