Fear not, electric vehicle owners and considerers: Fast-charging is about to get simplified. Thanks to the SAE, the ACEA, and most major OEMs, the CCS is about to get all AC/DC, and very soon, if demonstrations at EVS go according to plan.
OK, let’s back that up, in case you’re not a credentialed automotive engineer. Since the dawn of automotive electrification, the collective fear in the industry is that there is not a standard universally agreed-upon charging port between the different manufacturers (OEMs), and thus, no relevant way to build a cost-efficient infrastructure for charging away from home or work. According to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the European Manufacturer’s Association (ACEA), the Combined Charging System (CCS) may soon change this.
The CCS is a single port fast-charging system that can have your EV back on the road in as little as 15-20 minutes. CCS integrates regular AC-charging, fast AC-charging, DC-charging at home and ultra-fast DC-charging technologies into one vehicle inlet. This will allow EV drivers to charge at most existing charging stations regardless of power source and should encourage adoption of a standardized infrastructure. And, according to the SAE, the combined charger will “reduce development and infrastructure complexity, improve charging reliability, reduce the total cost-of-ownership for end customers and provide low maintenance costs.”
So far, Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen have signed on in support, and live demonstrations will take place next week at the Electric Vehicle Symposium 26, with a goal of adoption beginning in 2017.
