If we’re playing word association, Swedish automaker has a few we can think of that fit it well: Safe, practical, and wagon. Yet, unless you went for a lifted Volvo XC70 over the past few years, you were out of luck when it came to that last part.
Fortunately, Volvo has seen the error of its ways and will is introducing the 2014 Volvo V60 at the New York Auto Show this week, heralding a new era of pragmatic long-roofs in the U.S. Volvo has not yet released pricing information or when it will be available, much less final specifications, but the S60 comes with three engine options in the U.S., and we assume that’ll hold true for the wagon variant. At the bottom of the ladder is a turbocharged, 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine that makes 250 horsepower. Moving up from there is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 with 300 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive. And finally–and Volvo has confirmed its arrival for the U.S. already–there’s the R-Design model with a boosted version of the 3.0-liter engine and 325 horsepower. We’ve driven the S60 extensively and enjoyed the heck out of it.
Of course, further goodies from Volvo outfitter Polestar will also be available.
“Many consumers will be glad to see the addition of this exciting sports wagon to the Volvo lineup in America. And this time, we’ve added sophistication with the dynamic driving performance of a sedan,” says Volvo North America’s CEO John Maloney, in a statement.
Auto journalists are attracted to Volvo station wagons nearly as much as hipsters, so you can bet we’re excited about this announcement. The 2014 Volvo V60 Sports Wagon will enter the U.S. sometime in early 2014.
