The current MazdaSpeed3 is a stonking tribute to the glory of putting way too much power to the front wheels and being all the better for it. The car actually has to electronically limit its torque output in its first three gears to keep it going in a relatively straight line.
That might not be much of a problem for the next-generation if one report proves correct. According to the U.K.’s Auto Express, the future car looks to abandon its turbocharged, 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine for a free-revving 2.0-liter engine with just 200 horsepower or so–up 45 horses from the base 155-horsepower engine slated for the 2013 Mazda3.
The 2014 Mazda3 is losing about 200 pounds versus the current car, which should make losing 63 horsepower and gobs of torque a little more manageable. Auto Express went on the European press launch for the 2014 Mazda3 and was told that the MazdaSpeed version, known as the MPS overseas, would be returning this December, “but not as you’d expect.”
We think that could be a little far-fetched, as Ford has introduced a 252-horsepower Focus ST with fantastic results, and Volkswagen’s 2015 GTI will have about 230 horsepower from a turbocharged four-cylinder of its own. Mazda has been going for lightweight over high horsepower for decades now, but we’re not sure it will abandon its core performance market.
Then again, the brand has been competing with turbocharged diesel-powered SkyActiv-D 2014 Mazda6 race cars these days, and with some success might we add. Would it be too far out of question for Mazda to shake up its hot hatchback with a high-horsepower compact with a diesel version to compete against the upcoming Volkswagen GTD? We don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility.
