Recall Central: 2012 Chevy Cruze, Sonic, Buick Verano

2012 Buick Verano Front Quarter Lodge

General Motors is recalling the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Sonic, and Buick Verano because of an airbag issue. Scion recently had a similar issue with airbag deployment, and is currently undergoing a recall of the 2012 Scion iQ.

The Issue

2012 Chevrolet Cruze passengers side three quarters 300x187 imageAccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the affected GM models have a shorting bar that could come in to contact with the air bag terminals on the driver’s side. If the bar does come in to contact with the air bag terminals during a crash, it could prevent them from deploying, which could lead to a higher risk of injury.

The Fix

General Motors will notify owners of the affected Cruze, Sonic, and Buick Verano models, and dealers will replace the steering wheel airbag coil free of charge. Owners can also get more information by contacting GM at 1-800-521-7300 and use recall number 12261. Owners may also contact the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 or get more information on its website at www.safecar.gov.
