When we last saw the 2014 Chevrolet SS participating in any type of official duties, it was being unveiled at Daytona International Speedway before NASCAR’s speedweeks kicked off. Today, we finally have a price tag to go along with Chevy’s all-new Super Sport sedan, and it starts at $44,470, including a $995 destination fee. If you want a fully-loaded SS, get ready to pony up an additional $1,400 for a power sunroof ($900) and a full-size spare tire ($500). Those are the only two options available on the 2014 Chevrolet SS.
The SS will only be available in America (even though it’s based on the Holden Commodore which is available in Australia) and is the Golden Bowtie’s first rear-wheel drive sedan since the 1996 Impala SS. An LS3 6.2-liter V-8 engine, rated at 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque, is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which can be shifted using the paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. As to be expected, this engine will force the SS to pay a gas guzzler tax, but we don’t think owners will get hung up on that. Standard features include HID headlights, LED daytime running lights, MyLink with a color touch screen, and navigation. A Bose audio system, a color heads up display, dual zone climate control, heated and cooled front seats, a back-up camera, Blind Zone alert, and Lane Departure Warning are all standard features as well.
Chevrolet focused on handling with the SS and included a MacPherson front strut, 50/50 weight distribution, a low center of gravity, and an electronic power steering system. Of course, with 415 hp and eight cylinders catapulting you forward, you’re going to need some serious stopping power. The 2014 Chevrolet SS has just that, with a set of Brembo brakes up front standard. The SS rolls along on forged aluminum wheels which are wrapped in high-performance 245/40ZR19 tires in front and 275/35ZR19 tires on the rear.
You can order a 2014 Chevrolet SS in five different exterior colors: Mystic Green, Silver Ice Metallic, Red Hot 2, Phantom Black Metallic and Heron White. The interior will only be available in black and will feature bucket seats up front. Chevrolet says that the SS is expected to enter dealer showrooms later this fall.
