Ever since Ferdinand Porsche could get his 911 sports car onto a track in 1964, it’s been at home there. Now in its sixth generation, the 2013 Porsche 911 RSR keeps up the company’s proud tradition of competitive sporting prowess and somehow defying the laws of physics by making a rear-heavy sports car handle well.
Codenamed the “991″ generation, this 911 RSR adopts the all-new chassis of the 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 street car, but it adopts a 4.0-liter flat-6 engine instead of the street car’s 3.8-liter engine. Power output is high and weight is low; neither number has yet been revealed by the automaker. But expect it to be competitive with BMWs, Aston Martins, Ferraris, and Corvettes at LeMans or in the American and European LeMans racing series at around 500 to 600 horsepower.
We have just over a minute and a half to salivate over the race car, which few will ever be able to drive. But, if you have the means, Porsche is advertising its 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 street car for just over $130,000. Sharing much of its light weight and race-sourced technology with the Porsche 911 RSR, it, too, sounds glorious. Whether it sounds better than the race car, we’ll let you be the judge.
