Porsche has built a reputation for building generations of excellent sports cars, but as the German automaker has shown us in the past decade, it’s not averse to challenging perceptions. Nearly a decade ago much of the Porsche cognoscenti were up in arms amid murmurs of a Porsche SUV. While the market would undoubtedly be there, would it not offend purists and possibly dilute the core brand? Porsche pressed on and in 2003 released the Cayenne. A few years later the bold move was widely regarded as a success. So much so that Porsche decided to persist in its expansion of its fleet, and the Porsche Panamera sedan was born. And it appears the iconic brand is not done yet.
Our friends at Automobile Magazine report smaller SUVS and crossovers— taking inspiration from the Cayenne— are on the way. Porsche has said we can expect the launch of the 2014 Porsche Macan, the automaker’s entry level crossover, to launch next spring. Audi will be supplying its quattro all-wheel-drive system, as well as Audi Q5 engines. The Macan is expected to compete with the likes of the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK. Pricing is expected to start around $45,000. And there’s more, too. Porsche is expected to restyle the 2014 Panamera (on sale next year), and a convertible model could be in the Panamera’s future as well.
The popular Porsche Cayman will debut a second generation next year, and is expected to keep its entry-level 2.7-liter flat-6 engine, and bigger 3.4-liter flat-6. We can expect some aesthetic changes and a price increase, though nothing dramatic or out of place on either front. We’re also told a limited number of Porsche 918 Spyders will float down from the heavens and make an earthly debut. The concept originally made waves at the Geneva Auto Show a couple of years ago, and we understand the cars are in development. With Porsche aiming to be a future full-line automaker, we can expect a bounty of changes coming, and no shortage of play on the rumor-mill.
