It was quirky, cheesy, and addictive all at once; The 1960s Batman TV show was known for kitschy costumes, on-screen Boom! Sock! Pow! graphics and a jolly Batman and Robin. Undoubtedly one of the stars of the show was the George Barris designed Batmobile, and now it is up for auction.
Collectible car auction group Barret-Jackson is conducting the event scheduled to take place in Scottsdale, Arizona January 19 2013. Originally a 1955 Lincoln Futura created by Ford and aided by the Lincoln design team, it was purchased by George Barris for one dollar. Barris then quickly set out to modify the 19-ft long Futura for the Batman TV series.
Holy Grail of TV Cars
Besides being prominently featured on television as a virtual star of the show for years, the Batmobile is a chance for Batman collectors and car enthusiasts to own a piece of one-of-a-kind history. “The 1966 Batmobile by George Barris is one of the most famous Hollywood cars in history and it has become a true icon that has been carried from generation to generation of Batmobiles to follow,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “This vehicle not only marks the significant Bat logo that sits on the middle of its door, but a time in television history where they defied the odds of making a car the real star of the show.” We couldn’t agree more.
