When we went to the 2014 Mazda3 introduction event in New York last week, Mazda’s head of design for North America, Derek Jenkins, said the 2014 Mazda3 sedan’s introduction was still a few weeks off and that he thought it looked better than the hatchback.
Make that one week.
A few hours before the unveiling of the Mazda3 hatchback, pictures of it were leaked from Russian sources. The sedan met the same fate, as Top Gear Russia committed the same breach of embargo. At least Jenkins was right; it’s a darn good-looking sedan.
Powered by the same SkyActiv 2.0- and 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines as the hatchback with 155 and 184 horsepower, respectively–at least in the U.S. market–the 2014 Mazda3 borrows plenty of cues from the larger 2014 Mazda6, particularly aft the rear doors. With swoopy lines, a truncated trunk, and wide tail lights, the 2014 Mazda3 makes the best use of its smaller canvas as it can, and we think it’s a knockout.
The 2014 Mazda3 sedan’s interior looks like its virtually identical to the hatchback’s, including the freestanding infotainment display that’s more than a little evocative of a certain German sports sedan brand that might have three letters in its name, beginning with B and ending with W. The interior comes off as high-quality and high-class relative to its competition.
We should be driving the 2014 Mazda3 here fairly soon, coming back to you with plenty of impressions. Given how much we’ve fawned over the 2014 Mazda CX-5 and 2014 Mazda6 so far, we have no doubt the Mazda3 should be able to keep up with our lofty expectations. Look for the 2014 Mazda3 to go on sale this fall.
