The beginning of a new month can only mean one thing for automakers: the release of the previous month’s sales figures. There’s a lot to process, but we’ve taken the liberty to crunch the numbers into one nifty briefing just for you. Our list of winners and losers in the sales arena feature many familiar faces to each category, and one or two who find themselves in uncharted territory. Volkswagen, Toyota, and Lexus are no stranger to pulling down big sales figures month after month. Ford, on the other hand, doesn’t spend much time in the automotive sales cellar but in October it did. All the other usual suspects, with the exception of Land Rover, which has been enjoying Evoque sales, are in familiar territory.
Winner: Infiniti +27.6%
Infiniti took the sales increase crown for October moving 8,757 units last month, an increase of 27.6 percent from October 2011. More than half of Infiniti’s lineup (four out of seven models offered) saw an increase as Infiniti was able to move 1,895 more units than over the course of October a year ago. The all-new JX crossover sold 2,084 units last month adding to its year-to-date total of 16,437 units. The FX portfolio came in second place with 783 units sold; an increase of 18.5 percent over the same time last year. The M lineup with an 11.1 percent increase with 738 units sold and finally, the QX SUV saw sales rise 17.9 percent with 1,467 units moved. All other vehicles in Infiniti’s lineup tumbled when compared to the same time last year including the G sedan (-8.9 percent), G coupe (-14.3 percent), and the EX which took the biggest fall (-47.3 percent).
Winner: Volkswagen +22.4%
Volkswagen turned in its best October since 1972 with 34,311 units sold. That’s good for a 22.4 percent increase over the same time last year. As for year-to-date sales figures, Volkswagen saw an increase of 35.6 percent over the first 10 months of 2011. That 35.6 percent sales increase represents Volkswagen’s best yearly pace since 1973. In all, Volkswagen has continued to watch its sales figures grow over the past 26 consecutive months. Leading the charge volume wise was the Jetta with 11,253 units sold even though that’s down 0.9 percent over the same month last year. The redesigned Beetle took second place with 2,439 units sold.
Winner: BMW +20.9%
When October finally came to a close, BMW had moved 26,451 units in 31 days; good for a 20.9 percent increase over the same month last year. The Z4 had a good month as it watched sales surge from 92 units in October 2011 to 246 last month. That’s good for a 167.4 percent increase which was far and away the biggest mover percentage-wise. The 6 Series took second place with an 86 percent hike moving 770 units last month as opposed to 414 during the same month last year. The volume leader for BMW last month was, unsurprisingly, the 3 Series with 9,729 units sold. It also checked in with a solid 25.6 percent increase from the same month last year.
Winner: Toyota +16.8%
Toyota is no stranger to leading the way in sales and last month was nothing new as the Japanese automaker enjoyed a 16.8 percent increase in sales. In all, 135,392 people bought a new Toyota with the Camry leading the way volume-wise with 29,926 units sold. Percentage-wise, the Camry saw sales climb 36 percent over the same month last year. The Prius family experienced the biggest bump in sales percentage wise with 16,774 units sold. That’s good for a 52.4 percent increase over the same month last year. The Corolla wasn’t to be outdone either as it moved 20,949 units last month, an increase of 29 percent over October of 2011.
Winner: Lexus +15.2%
Toyota’s luxury arm also enjoyed an increase in sales last month. Thanks to 11,647 total units sold, Lexus saw its sales figures climb 15.2 percent compared to the same month last year. The volume leader fell onto the redesigned ES which moved 5,971 units in October; good for a 38.9 percent increase. The all-new GS saw sales skyrocket with 1,521 units sold last month, an increase of 471.8 percent. The rest of Lexus’ lineup experienced drop-offs in sales with the CT (-20.6 percent), HS (-98.5 percent), IS (-19.8 percent), and the outgoing LS (-29.7 percent) all unable to pull their own weight.
Loser: Nissan -6%
Nissan moved 70,928 units last month, down six percent over the same month last year. Although it comes as little surprise, the all-new Altima paced Nissan’s sales with 24,623 units sold; an increase of 12.8 percent over the same time last year. The all-electric Leaf enjoyed a hardy October with 1,579 units sold; up 86 percent from the same month last year. The all-new Pathfinder also saw its sales figures rise 46.9 percent with 3,043 units sold. The biggest losers for Nissan included the Sentra (-32.9 percent), Armada and Xterra (both down 34.3 percent), Murano (-29.9 percent) Frontier (-29.1 percent), Titan (-25.2 percent), and GT-R (-14.9 percent). Every single truck of van, with the exception of the Quest and Pathfinder, saw sales decline over the same time last year.
Loser: Mitsubishi -9.1%
Picking on Mitsubishi’s sales struggles as of late is like hitting someone with glasses; you just don’t do it. However, the purpose of this list is to show you which automaker had a good October as well as those who didn’t. This is old hat for Mitsubishi as the Japanese automaker was only able to move 3,981 units last month. That number represents every single vehicle sold in the United States of America last month; down 9.1 percent over the same time last year. The Outlander Sport made up almost half of that figure with 1,675 units sold last month; good for a 17.9 percent increase over last October. Mitsubishi shouldn’t spend too much crying into its cereal though as current models in production were up seven percent over October 2011.
Loser: Volvo -14.3%
Volvo didn’t have much fun last month with its sales taking a hit to the tune of 14.3 percent when compared with the same time last year. Over the course of 31 days, Volvo was able to muster 4,200 units sold but that year-to-date sales are still down 2.2 percent with only two months remaining in 2012. Volvo’s best-seller came in the form of the XC60 with 1,562 units sold; an 82.1 percent climb over October 2011.
Loser: Lincoln -15.4%
Another automaker that appears lost lately is Lincoln. As a whole, Ford’s luxury arm was down 15.4 percent with every vehicle in the automaker’s portfolio (with the exception of the MKT and Navigator) posting losses. That includes the MKZ (-17.4 percent), MKS (-28.7 percent), and MKX (-9.2 percent). The two lone bright spots for Lincoln included the MKT (+15.4 percent) and Navigator (+8.5 percent).
Loser: Land Rover/Jaguar -20/-23%
Land Rover experienced a 20 percent decrease in sales last month over the same time last year. Land Rover is banking on the all-new 2013 Range Rover to pull the brand out of this funk when it goes on sale next month. Jaguar, on the other hand, saw October sales drop 23 percent over the same month last year but the 2013 model year lineup is revamped and should also rejuvenate a brand that’s been working on reworking its image.
