It looks like Mitsubishi will be getting a luxury sedan in the near future with some help from Nissan. Expanding upon its original Original Equipment Manufacturing agreement, Nissan and Mitsubishi have decided to add a luxury sedan into Mitsubishi’s lineup. The idea of adding a high-end vehicle to Mitsubishi’s stable had been under review by each company’s higher-ups for quite some time now.
As part of an agreement made to share technologies and other resources late last year, Nissan will hand over a luxury sedan to Mitsubishi based on the Infiniti M and Nissan Fuga which is sold outside of the U.S. The model will resemble the M and Fuga that are coming out this model year. In exchange for a luxury sedan, Mitsubishi will supply Nissan with an electric Minicab-MiEV commercial van.
Nissan created the Fuga to compete with the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-class, Jaguar S-type and most notably the Lexus GS outside of America. The second-generation Infiniti M fills that category stateside as an M35 or M45. The Fuga/M variant has multiple engine options ranging from a 2.5 liter V-6 all the way to a 4.5 liter V-8. The Fuga also comes equipped with a feature named Distance Control Assistance which prevents the driver from going too fast. The gas pedal pushes back against the driver’s foot when the in-dash navigation system determines the current speed is unsafe.
