Earlier this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced it was investigating complaints of broken rear axles on the MY1999-2003 Ford Windstars.
The federal agency is now focusing attention on possible corrosion on the front subframe in addition to the rear axles breaks.
Nearly a million vehicles may be affected in the NHTSA’s investigation. Again, many of the complaints come from Windstar owners located in so-called “salt belt” states which use salt to speed the melting of seasonal snows. According to the NHTSA, such salt could be responsible for the corrosion found on broken rear axle beams.
Ford states it is cooperating fully with the federal agency in this second investigation.
The Ford Windstar was discontinued in 2003.
