The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has closed its investigation into an airbag wiring problem plaguing certain model year Jeep Wranglers. The recall affected 220,000 Wranglers assembled from 2007 to 2008. The NHTSA called off the investigation after Chrysler recalled the faulty Jeeps and extended the warranties on others that also might be affected.
The investigation began in May when the NHTSA received 181 complaints of the faulty airbag warning light. Out of those, 82 concerned right-hand drive Wranglers, a configuration is mainly used by the U.S. Postal service in dusty, rural areas. Chrysler believes the airbag light became faulty because it was exposed to the elements and dust only worsened it.
Chrysler also recalled 5334 right-hand drive Wranglers spanning the 2008-2012 model years last month. Defective clock spring assemblies were determined to be the problem there, but no solution has been offered up just yet. Jeep is also extending the warranty on all 2007 left-hand drive Wranglers for up to 150,000 miles or 10 years because of the clock spring assembly issue.
