Next-Generation Acura MDX to Call in Alabama its Sweet Home

Honda is adding Made-In-USA stickers to its Acura MDX, as it plans to move production from Canada to its plant in Lincoln, Alabama.

In order to reduce the high costs of exports, Honda is shuffling its production lines: the Acura MDX moves to the South, while the 2012 Honda CR-V will pick up the slack in Canada from Honda’s Sayama, Japan plant. To prepare Alabama for MDX production, Honda will invest $300 million, anticipating a rise in capacity from 300,000 to 340,000 units.

Honda’s Alabama facility primarily builds the company’s larger vehicles: the Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline. Honda’s V-6 engines all hail from there as well. Given that the MDX shares with the aforementioned vehicles both its basic underpinnings and powerplant, the new addition to the plant’s capacity won’t be too much of a stretch.
