Car enthusiast magazines across the pond recently posted spyshots of what appears to be the 2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI. Details of the sporty hatchback are extremely scant: struts framing the passenger window can be seen, but info like design changes, fuel economy, and pricing have not been released.
Car enthusiast info, though, is plentiful. Colleagues over at Automobile Magazine provide plenty of such info, covering the upcoming VW Golf GTI’s increased horsepower, front differential, and underlying new chassis. From a car buyer’s point of view, the 2013 GTI will be faster, have better handling when pushed, and lighter, the last of which may translate to better fuel economy.
The 2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI will debut at the Paris Motor Show later this year, then go on sale in early 2012. We’ll post details on the American model once they’re made available by the automaker.
Automotive.com’s take: We haven’t driven the base Volkswagen Golf or the Golf GTI. We have driven the top-of-the-line and potent Euro-spec VW Golf R (pictured) for model year 2012, which we found fun to drive even as a daily driver, though the $35,000-esque price tag gave one pause. Says Automotive.com Associate Editor Matthew Askari:
“The 2012 Volkswagen Golf R doesn’t especially excel in any one category, but it will score very high marks in all categories. The R is a daily driver with comfortable seating for four and room for a snug five, if need be. But while it’s got the utility of a hatchback, make no mistake, underneath the guts are a pure sports coupe.”
