Ethanol continues to make inroads into the public’s psyche despite naysayers.
There are more than 1,600 E85 refueling pumps in the U.S. today, and that number is expected to increae as the availability of fuel-flex (i.e., E85) vehicles coming from the manufacturers. For example, General Motors offers 18 fuel flex vehicles (FFV). Enterprise has a fleet of FFV that totals 73,000 available for rent.
Note that ethanol, like gasoline, comes in different mixes. There is now E10 (10 percent ethanol, 90 percent gas), E20 (20 percent ethanol, 80 percent gas), E30 (30 percent ethanol, 70 percent gas), E40 (40 percent ethanol, 60 percent gas) and E85 (85 percent ethanol, 15 percent gas). Wow!
Instead of offering a pump for each blend, a new blender pump has been introduced that allows the user to select which blend of ethanol he or she wants to put into their vehicle.
Our take? This is a smart idea. Unfortunately, people, from our experience, are not. We wonder how soon it will be when we start receiving news on drivers pumping their FFV with the wrong blend.
