Don’t you love car enthusiasts? According to Rennteam.com forum member Rossi, someone got their hands on the Porsche 918 Spyder brochure and typed its contents onto the site. Porsche fans have been beside themselves absorbing details on this supercar, which stands out not only by its potent 4.5-liter V-8, but two electric motors. This makes the Porsche 918 Spyder a hybrid though nothing like familiar and fuel-friendly mainstays like the Toyota Prius hatch.
We already uploaded plenty of shots of the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid in an earlier post. One of the 918 Spyder’s more interesting features is the use of “Sail” mode by the transmission. Basically, it separates, or “decouples”, from the V-8 in order to save on fuel. Porsche went through a lot of trouble making the 918 Spyder hybrid as light as possible. This is particularly seen in the available pricey Weissach package, which reduces the 918 Spyder’s weight around 77 pounds. This is done not only using more light weight materials like magnesium and ceramic, but eliminating many comfort features like air condition, leather seats, and door handles. (Straps are used to open/shut the doors.) Thinking of throwing your smartphone in the Porsche 918 Spyder? Not if it has the Weissach package: no glove box, no storage unit between the two front seats. Porsche shaved off nearly six pounds by “covering” the 918 Spyder hybrid with foil instead of paint as well.
