Mercedes-Benz is comfortable letting you know that the comfy 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers superior levels of comfort. Just how comfortable? It comfortably mentions “comfort” or “comfortable” 19 times in its press release. On page one. Of four. But is it? Is it comfortable? Well, yes. At least the previous S-Class was; we’ll get a closer look at the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class this summer.
This week the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will make its global debut in Hamburg, and in the run-up, the luxe automaker is highlighting the pedigree of the model, and its predecessors. The 1903 Mercedes-Benz Simplex is a striking example of this, debuting with a high-performance 60-hp four-cylinder engine, noteworthy for the period. And Mercedes says “comfort” includes “various factors such as a feeling of safety, good driving characteristics, sufficient performance, a high degree of ergonomics, and an impression of excellent quality.”
The forerunners to the S-Class achieved this one step at a time through the decades. An air suspension to dramatically advance ride comfort, for example, or the addition in the 1950s of heating and air conditioning, features we take for granted these days. And the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will likely continue to be the benchmark for full-size luxury sedans.
From our spy shots of the new sedan, we can see a commanding, classically styled S-Class that will continue to please its target demographic. We expect Mercedes to keep the supercharged V-8 and V-12 engines, and offer diesel and hybrid versions . It’s possible a high-output supercharged V-6 could be offered in the mix, as automakers increasingly are offering smaller, more fuel efficient options.
