Mazda 2 to Debut at Geneva Motor Show

Mazda2 Left

Reuters reports that images of the all-new Mazda 2 have been released.A little history. In the ‘80s, Ford Motor Co. asked Mazda to build it an inexpensive, compact car. The result was the 1987 Ford Festiva. The Festiva led to the Autozam Revue in the ‘90s. From the Revue emerged the Demio which is known throughout the world as the Mazda 2 (or 2).

The new 2 continues as is a five-door hatchback. According to Mazda, it has been restyled from its generic looks to fit the automaker’s well-known “Zoom-Zoom-Zoom” philosophy. From what we can tell from the image, it looks like Mazda succeeded.

Details such as engines and, possibly, price will be unveiled at the 2’s Geneva debut. Our take? The 2 is currently not sold in the U.S. However, with BMW, Honda, Nissan, and Toyota reintroducing compacts in the world’s largest market (1-Series, Fit, Versa, and Yaris respectively), and the microvan Mazda5’s sale in the U.S., we think Mazda would have another sure-fire hit on its hands if it brings it across the pond.

My wish list for specs for a U.S. model:

    Base engine: 1.6L, 120-ish HP
    Upgrade engine: 2.0L, 145 HP

    Optional Bluetooth & Nav.
    $13,000 starting, $17,500 fully-loaded.

This looks like a sweet little ride! I hope they sell it in the U.S.
