The California Legislature, finally getting the balls to do something about the state debt, has come up with the idea of using license plates as bill boards.Wait. What?
Dem Senator Curren Price of Los Angeles proposed the out-of-the-box bill. “We’re just trying to find creative ways of generating additional revenues,” said Price. “It’s an exciting marriage of technology with need, and an opportunity to keep California in the forefront.”
Details of the technology are scarce. Basically, the license plate would be identical to a standard one while the vehicle was in motion. However, an ad would pop up if the car’s stopped for four seconds or longer.
The “ad plate” could also be used to flash custom messages like the driver’s alma matter or favorite sports team. Other uses include displaying traffic information or even Amber alerts.
Smart Plate, a San Francisco-based company, is currently developing the technology.
