Racing legend John Surtees, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the English Channel Tunnel’s opening, drove the 31 miles through the tunnel from England to France in a Ginetta GV50EV.
The British-made Ginetta GV50EV is an electric prototype vehicle that uses a brushless DC motor that is designed and manufactured by Zytek. A two-seater sports top, the GV50EV is capable of reaching speeds of 120 mph and claims to have a range of 250 miles an hour. Surtees, who is a motorcycle and F1 champion, became the first person to drive through the Chunnel in a production vehicle and is demonstrating that at 75 years old he does not plan on slowing down anytime soon.
Our take? While Sir Richard Branson may have broken a world record for crossing the English Channel in an amphibious vehicle, he drove over it, not under it which in our opinions isn’t quite as cool. Oh, and Surtees rode over to pick up some French wine as part of the 37th Annual Beaujolais Run as well.
