Latest Source of Biofuel: Willow Trees

Weeping Willow Tree

Woody materials used as a source for biofuels are more eco-friendly because little energy is put into growing them, there is no use of fertilizer, and wood products are grown on land that doesn’t compete with food production.

Because of these facts, researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand are studying the possibility of using the willow tree as a source for biofuels.

The research team has discovered a simple, low energy way to isolate cellulose from wood which is used to make the biofuels. Moreover, the process speeds up the removal of an element called lignin, which can be used instead of oil to make products like resin. This helps assure a further reduction of the need for oil.
