Out of the millions of SUVs and crossovers sold in the U.S. each year, few will ever see duty off-road. But there are some that need to, so there’s a smaller group of vehicles every year that’s able to cater to such an audience.
Jeep hasn’t forgotten about those buyers, launching two special edition versions of its popular SUVs to help out: The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and Wrangler Moab Edition. First up is the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, which was first shown as a concept vehicle earlier this year at the Moab Jeep Safari. Available with either the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine or 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, Jeep claims the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk to be the most off-road capable version of the midsize SUV ever. It comes with Kevlar-reinforced tires mounted on 18-inch wheels, steel body rail protection, an adjustable air suspension for ground clearance, and an electronic limited-slip differential for distributing power to wheels to gain the best traction off-road, among a long list of other standard features. Inside, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk comes standard with leather and suede combination seats and has tow hooks and a rear light bar built into its body for help off the beaten path.
As for the 2013 Jeep Wrangler Moab Special Edition, it’s mostly just shoring up the Wrangler Sahara with blacked-out trim pieces, tail light guards, and a power-dome hood, giving it a sense of exclusivity. As it is, it’s pretty hard to make the Wrangler more capable than it already is. The biggest functional differences are winch-ready steel bumpers, a rear limited-slip differential, and Kevlar-reinforced tires on 17-inch wheels borrowed from the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, albeit outfitted in black.
Available as either a two- or four-door, the Wrangler Moab is available in the best-named color palette on any vehicle since the 1970s: Crush, Dozer, Rock Lobster, Gecko, black, and bright white.
Both arrive at a dealership near you this October.
