The old expression “never make the same mistake twice” could be dubbed Jaguar’s unofficial mantra as the automaker preps a new, yet-unnamed small sedan. Jaguar has made it known that the all-new car will be just that, new, and won’t imitate the X-Type, a vehicle widely regarded as a failure.
“We try not to make the same mistakes twice,” Jaguar Land Rover CEO Dr. Ralf Speth told MSN Cars.
This means we shouldn’t expect another repeat of the disgraced X-Type, introduced back in 2001 with a lot of fanfare. The proposed BMW 3 Series fighter was suppose to put Jaguar on par with the likes of its German competition, but that never materialized. In fact, the X-Type was so widely rejected that Jaguar cut production short in an attempt to save the brand’s reputation.
“Customers liked the X-Type but brand loyalists did not,” said Jaguar brand director Adrian Hallmark to MSN Cars. “It was a very polarizing car”.
The all-new small Jaguar the company’s latest attempt at a 3 Series competitor, and the price is expected to reflect that. We expect it to be priced at about the same level as the BMW 3 Series and Audi’s popular A4 model. Jaguar has also said it will offer features that aren’t available in the competition’s offerings as well as a few surprises in both added technology and exterior styling cues. The British automaker has expanded its sights beyond its home market and will look to branch out into more global sales in order to move more volume.
“Jaguar needs volume,” group sales director Phil Popham told MSN Cars. “There are a lot of customers and retailers to feed.”
