Automotive industry analysis firm IntelliChoice has released its results from its second annual mid-year “Cost of Ownership” analysis. Better known as IntelliChoice “Best Bets,” the analysis firm ranks 15 vehicles from the 2013 model year and includes the Acura RDX, Audi A3 TDI, and the Lexus RX 350. Overall, 15 models were given the accolade, hailing from 10 different automakers. General Motors and Toyota, two of the world’s biggest automakers, led the way with five nods apiece.
To figure out what vehicles were worthy of being included as a “Best Bet,” IntelliChoice staffers evaluate vehicles from the upcoming model year that show a high rate of being able to retain its value in the future. All 15 vehicles included on the list are from the 2013 model year. The latest model year vehicles were compared to the ones it will be replacing and a basis for expected ownership costs helped shape each “Best Bet” selection. This basis includes the current depreciation rate for the vehicle itself, how much fuel it will consume over the life of ownership, repair bills, how long it will take to pay off if financed, and the monthly insurance bill. Applicable state fees for each 2013 vehicle were also taken into consideration. This list will be updated again at the end of the year after another 1,800 vehicles are scrutinized.
Before giving a vehicle the title of being an IntelliChoice “Best Bet,” staffers pour over information collected from the automaker itself, the government, and call in another group of analysts to help dissect all of the information collected. Each staffer is tabbed with estimating the actual cost of ownership for each new vehicle over the next five years. Then that estimation is compared to other competitive vehicles in its class.
