Hyundai, like Judas Priest, understands TURBO POWER! And nowhere is this more evident than in the Veloster, its Gen-X social media marketing experiment on wheels that—in this shade of red normally reserved for nuclear submarine kill switches—resembles a tomato thrown at the wall of CBGB. Ignition drove it for the Motor Trend Channel, and conveniently learned that launching the lil’ red tomato down a dragstrip (and not at Rob Halford’s forehead, though why would you) hard will activate the windshield wipers.
We last drove the Hyundai Veloster Turbo in June and found it to be “a thoroughly competent hot hatch, buoyed primarily by its polarizing looks.” Carlos Lago describes as a “one-wheel peel superhero.” Is it a proper hot hatch? Well, watch the video and find out. But here’s a hint: ”it’s no GTI, no Civic Si,” says Carlos. But hey—it costs less than both of those, has more torque than the latter, and more fuel economy than the former. “So while it’s not as fun to drive, it makes it up in different ways.” If that isn’t damning with faint praise in the hot-hatch market, then we don’t know what is.
