For this episode, Frank Markus of Motor Trend travels to Saint Tropez to test out the brand new Mercedes-Benz CLA, the automaker’s new entry into the youth market. The idea of a Mercedes-Benz under $30,000 seems dangerous, especially when you take the old C230 hatchback into consideration. However, Markus sets out to determine if the automaker had a new philosophy on an entry level luxury car in mind when producing the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA.
The new CLA-Class is based on Europe’s A-Class hatchback, and is all about meeting the US’s strict CAFE regulations. Although it’s priced under $30,000, it may be hard to keep the price that low; after adding a few options, the price gets closer to the larger C-Class. However, you don’t have to drive the new car to realize that it is a new idea.
Like other cars in the Mercedes-Benz, it has many of the same standard features and draws a crowd thanks to its styling and design. It may not be a good car for long distance travel for many adults, but for young families, it’s the perfect entry car into the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
