Toyota has become one of the world’s great automakers by building on a well earned, brick by brick reputation for reliability, quality, and economy. How, though, does it shake the reputation for being boring?
After years without a true sports car, Toyota named a new CEO—Akio Toyoda—and he immediately set out to add a little exuberance to the range. You have to remember the 2013 Scion FR-S wasn’t even a pre-production model then, and this was years after the last Supra. SoiIn what form did the fun finally come? The Lexus IS F. On episode 33 of Motor Trend’s Ignition, the MT gang take out a 2012 Lexus IS F to see if it can hang with the rival BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Lexus gave the IS F a 5.0-liter V-8 that confidently delivers 416 hp—near identical to the M3′s 414 hp—but short of the C63 AMG’s 6.2-liter V-8 delivery. But horsepower and zero to 60 times (the IS F does it in 4.5 seconds) is only one of several ingredients that go in to making a fun to drive sports car. How does the 2012 Lexus IS F fare on the track and road? How does it stack up compared with the competition? You’ll just have to check out the video below:
